Melatonin inhibits puberty
In early childhood, high concentrations of melatonin block pituitary hormones that stimulate the sex glands (pituitary-gonadal system). With age, the level of melatonin in the child’s body decreases, which causes the activation of the pituitary-gonadal system and the start of puberty. This role of melatonin in puberty was proven in research more than half a century ago. I wrote in more detail about the role of melatonin in the prevention of aging and cancer here, and now the question is relevant – how an increase in body weight causes a decrease in melatonin levels and the onset of puberty.
The decline in melatonin concentration with age is usually attributed to gradual calcification of pineal cells. However, no causal relationship is found between weight gain and calcification. In addition, in studies, the decrease in melatonin levels is observed long before the onset of puberty, and the development of calcification often occurs later. Therefore, a decrease in melatonin levels caused by calcification of the pineal gland cannot be considered as a cause of puberty and is relevant for a later age. It is obvious that a significant decrease in the concentration of melatonin before puberty is mediated by another mechanism.Поділитися цим:
